Seen in Tech Services

This was a big week for original cataloging for me.  The highlight of which was far and away a pamphlet entitled Carniverous Parrots: Elder Evans’ Theory of the Wonders of Animal Life.  This item concerns a plague of sheep eating parrots that descended on  New Zealand in 1882.

The theory in the title has two parts to it.  The author presupposes that the parrots were eating the sheep because they were attempting to model human behavior, as they did with human speech.  Taking this as a given, the author suggests that we try to model other behaviors for other creatures, and in that way “teach lions to eat grass”.

That’s pretty much the end of it actually.  You’d expect the author to try to push for some sort of conservationist goal, but no, just teaching lions to eat grass.  Really kind of a let down actually.
