Review: Unseen Academicals

For years now Terry Pratchett has been using his Discworld novels to tell the greatest satires of modern society ever written.  Not bad for something that began as a straight sword and sorcery parody.

With Unseen Academicals he’s focusing mostly on Soccer hooliganism, but also academc politics, the fashion industry, and the difficulty people have in raising themselves from the lower classes.  Accordingly the story is a little bit more unfocused then some of Pratchett’s others, but he manages to hold the narrative together.  And of course being Pratchett the book is just wittier and more incisive than anything else published in the last year.

This isn’t quite up there with the best of his books, but it is one of his more entertaining ones, which is saying an awful lot.
